Is this what hell really is?

When I was around 12 years old, I started questioning my life and whether or not my life had a purpose. I then fell into depression and that was when my existential crisis began. (I'm 20 years old now)

Recently, my 14 year old sister and I went to go see this horror movie titled 'The Lazarus Effect.' If you have not seen the movie yet and plan on seeing it, I'll do my best not to ruin it. The movie's about death and trying to bring living things back to life. While watching the movie, one of the characters had a line that really hit me hard: "That's what Hell is, a continuous loop of your worst nightmare."

It might sound a bit like rubbish, but in some way I connect this line with existential crisis. I'm not sure why. Maybe you're a bit confused. I was, and still am confused up until now.

So my question is: Is it normal for a line like that to affect me? Is it normal to connect this with my existential crisis? HAALP

Apologies if it confuses or does not make sense to you. :/

Is It Normal?

  • I don't think you should watch horror movies. No offense but some personalities can't handle it. You are NOT in a loop. You are living a new day every day. Please don't over think the movie and stress yourself out. its just a movie Ok. And don't focus on the bad in your life focus on the good things that have happened. Would you be in hell if you experienced all these amazing things. I'm sure hell doesn't have sunsets, or beaches or beautiful trees and blue skies and nature. Or good music and good friends / family to help you when you're feeling down. You know? <3

  • Funny that you mention this because what I think of hell now was actually formed from lyrics I heard in a song and it stuck with me:
"Hell is not a place you go, if your not a Christian
It's the failure of your life's greatest ambition
It's a bad decision to blindly follow any religion
I don't see the difference in between the wrong and the wrong"

So, I completely understand what you're saying. I'd say it's normal. Sometimes you hear something and it clicks with you so well that it ends up having a big impact in your life.

  • If that's your belief, who am I to argue? That isn't my hell, but hell is kind of personal. No one can define it for me, so I won't tell you what yours is.

I'd say it's fairly normal to be affected by a movie line. Song lyrics can do the same.

But you don't sound like you are in crisis. Just exploring who you are and being a bit dramatic. Keep searching for your self. Maybe read a book on existentialism, because I don't think you fully grasp the concept.

  • I always liked the "Dante's inferno" versions of hell

  • It's normal for certain sayings to affect people. You just need to figure out your purpose in life to simply get out of the crisis.

  • If Hell exists, I think it's a dark, murky place like a swamp where those that did terrible things in their lives endure neverending pain and anguish until their souls break completely.

If you do good though, there's nothing to worry about. You'll be given a decent afterlife or you might even get another chance at a new life somewhere.

  • "That's what Hell is, a continuous loop of your worst nightmare."

I dunno, I feel like an eternity of anything would just turn dull. No matter how horrible your worst nightmare is, it would eventually get boring.

  • I'm sure each of us have our own view of what hell would be like, if it existed.
For me it would be an eternity of sitting around on a pink cloud strumming a fucking harp, with no sex, no booze, no drugs or porn.

  • I believe "Hell" was made up by religious and dictatorial leaders to scare the commoners into following their rules and dogma, and to make them feel obligated to give the church money. However, I do believe in Karma.
