I think the point of that is so that the girl would be scared, and the guy can be really 'brave' and she'll be impressed and... I've watched too many romance movies.
Listen, I personally don't think that's really a good 'first date' thing. Mostly just going with dinner and a movie (that doesn't scare the living hell out of you) is a good idea. After a few dates, try taking it up a notch.
But hey, that's just my opinion, and I don't speak for all girls. I'm sure there are tons of girls who are into being freaked out on a date.
