Shaving your public region can cause razor bumps in some people. You can also get ingrown hairs. Some people seem to be more sensitive to this than others. And then when the hair grows back you get stubble that itches for a few days.
One alternative to this is to get an electric razor (like this http://amzn.com/B001M1HHRK, although the battery life isn't particularly wonderful for this model - the shape and attachments work well) and trim your pubes. Not short enough to stubble - maybe 1/4" - 1/2".
And don't worry about the inverted nipple thing. It's not that big of a deal.
