The reason you saw a non pretty cat first was to show contrast between a decision made off of circumstance and a decision made off of what looks appealing to you.
Even though you knew your parents had the means to pay for and Feed the cat, so it wasn't that your scared of commitment.
Maybe you picked a pretty cat because you feel like you need to make the decision that your dad will like.
