It's a desperate act of a person in a very deep, dark place, who has lost all hope that things will ever get better for them.
I don't think it's cowardly. I can kind of see the argument if you're talking about someone leaving close family members (especially children) behind, but a suicidal person is so consumed with dispair they probably don't think they're good enough for their family anyway.
