Is ping-pong a sport?

I play ping-pong regularly, at a close to competitive level. Yes I call it "ping-pong", only because I feel like "table tennis" makes it sound like a subset of tennis. I train, I study techniques, and I play my ass off with my friends when I have the time. I go for hours on end and return soaked in sweat. So I feel if people treated the game the way I do, they'd be more comfortable calling it a sport. Not a game for frat houses.

I myself would call it a sport. I can see that it is not nearly as physically taxing as what we're used to in the world of sports. But just because it doesn't require any great degree of physical conditioning to play, that shouldn't make it any less of a sport. It's in the olympics, so if that's not enough for you then so be it.

Just interested in hearing your opinions. Maybe "I play sports I play ping-pong", is the real life equivallent of "I'm a gamer I play angry birds". Let me know what you think. If you disagree with me, I'm interested in hearing why. Any input will be appreciated.

It's a competitive event between two players, with an objective scoring system and victory conditions. Aka a sport.

By that criteria, chess is also a sport.

Add "a primarily physical activity" to your definition, and it works for me.

I call it table tennis because it's a subset of tennis.

Archery is definitely considered a sport, even though it's far less energetic than ping pong.
