She sounds like a woman who traded on her looks when she was younger and didn't care much about the other traits people would find attractive. Now the one thing she valued most about herself is fading, she probably feels absolutely petrified and desperate for anyone to convince her she's still worthwhile.
Lesson there for us all not to place too much emphasis on looks as opposed to every other attribute.
You are really onto something here....interesting thought is that as her outward beauty has started to fade, which she might have placed her worth in. Well, since that paradigm shift taking place, she has become a servant. She finds pleasure in doing things for others.
