Does marriage really affect how you feel about another person? And is having kids out of wedlock really that bad? do you think that marriage is necessary, or is it really just a party, a ring and a piece of paper?

Been with my partner for 20years, no cheating and no kids. No need to get married. Everyone knows we are together. Married people get divorced, People who live together can also part...but they can do it with some dignity..instead of paying someone to make it nasty. Being married would not change anything for us. marriage is an institution for raising children and was designed to keep the God fearing man in one bed. It doesn't work these days with all the single parents and divorces. It would be very good if it did.
Marriage is not necessary, it is a choice. But once that decision is made, it should be with total commitment. There appear to be many people on this site who think marriage is just 'something to do' and do not keep to their vows or respect their partners. For those people they should never get married and stay single if thats the life they want.
I think it's really unfair that people have to prove to governments and society that they care about each other through marriage.
Couples shouldn't have to prove how they feel about each other to ANYONE. Besides which, marriage doesn't give you nearly as much room for sexual experimentation as being unmarried does.
Relationships are enough commitment as is without a ring shackled to your finger, a certificate and an elaborate ceremony which is generally only performed to make the couple seem worthy in other people's eyes.
The sooner gay marriage and straight civil partnerships are made legal, the better!
My husband and I didn't get married because we felt that it would complete our love (or some other b.s. like that), but we did like the statement it makes to society: these two people made a final, public, legal, spiritual commitment together; which puts them in a different category than just common-law shacked-up-together because we love each other and want to save money by cohabitation.
