Is it wrong to have little empathy for people amid the virus

My mother was telling me that 4 people died in the same house in NJ from COVID-19, and I just shrugged it off. The death of people on a normal day does not phase me (probably because I havent lost a family member yet), but she got really angry at me. IIN?

You'll be singing a different tune when you lose someone close to you, believe me.

I agree. But I think alot of people are very sad over someone close to them dying but don't care much if it's someone they don't know.

    • Believe me. Someone told me their bunny passed yesterday and I felt sorry and cried about my cat that passed 7 months ago. I can empathize only with scenarios that I have experienced

Being unaffected by the death of other humans means you have poor social/community skills. Also poor survival skills if you want to think about how instinctively important it is to have the “Uh oh my specie die uh oh” response.

Empathy is a life skill. Might want to work on it.

What's sad is how many people in the world lack that skill.

Don't care unless it's a family member. Too many people on the planet, let them die.

Maybe you lack empathy, some people do. Your reaction isn't normal though

    • I seem to lack a presence of a lot of emotions, or rather they dont register properly in my brain. Like I feel happy and sad, but love (other than for my cat), empathy, sympathy, anger, those dont show, or show too much (angry)

People die. All of the time unnaturally. Because theres no natural way to die something always fails. When you get that old sometimes you can will yourself dead.

If it doesn't directly effect me or my family, It just gets put in the spam file. Everything dies (except that particular jellyfish, though how complex is a jellyfish really?) So why do I need to think of anything but neutral if I hear of a death of someone far, far away?

It does seem cold, but I really hate it when people fake sympathy just because it's expected. If you really don't care then it seems weird to pretend that you do. You can't really help it.
