Is it weird that my boyfriend calls his sister babe?

  • First, since you use the term "chavy" I assume you're British. In American culture, the use of "babe" is limited to those you are very close to, normally only someone of the opposite sex, often only those you have a sexual relationship with.

In the UK, it's not unknown for bus drivers, shop staff, and so on to call complete strangers "babe". It's a regional and class thing. Whether a guy calling his sister "babe" signifies anything really depends on how often he uses the word with other people, and how he says it.

It may be sexist of me, but I believe in female intuition.

Go with your feelings. If you have a gut-feeling that something is a bit "off" about their relationship, there probably is.

One caveat: you have to be sure that your background isn't distorting your perception. If, for example, you come from a family which is emotionally-distant, it's possible you could see perfectly normal sibling affection as a little weird. Or, if there was abuse in your childhood, you could be super-sensitive to even the hint of sexuality between siblings.

I think Justmehere makes a valid point about how your boyfriend's sexual preferences might have been strongly influenced by his sister. That doesn't necessarily mean that anything has happened between them, but who knows what is going on in the darkest recesses of your boyfriend's brain? If you feel that his sister is, in some sense, a competitor, then I think you should seriously consider whether you want to remain in the game. He should know his sister as well as he's likely to ever know anyone, and if he still thinks she's perfect, you're probably not going to be able to take that title from her.

So the question is, what are your hard limits? Are you willing to - in some sense anyway - share your boyfriend with his sister? Would your feelings for him change if you knew they had been sexually active in the past?
