Obviously whoever told you this has never smelled any corpses (or has REALLY BAD personal hygiene).
Belly button gunk generally does not contain pus. It does contain bits of dead skin but if you wash yourself often enough it shouldn't be there long enough to rot. It also contains sweat, and fluff from your clothes.
I think it's pretty normal to like the smell, I mean it's normal to like the smell of your own farts and shit and my belly button gunk doesn't smell anywhere near as bad as those things, it's also probably normal to want to taste it because who wouldn't be curious about things like that. I'm not sure it's normal to dig at any part of yourself so much you get a rash, though.
