I'm sure they are. They worry about their safety and job security, if nothing else. Smiling, nodding and letting you down easy is general practise. For comparison, how far do you think you'd get with a guy using the same tactics? Oh, you wouldn't even try most of the time because you'd have a fair fight on your hands?
