You said it yourself, you're in love with your version of the guy. I think you need to acknowledge that more and move on. This is not healthy behavior and it will make you feel even worse.
You don't need to stay with someone until you find something better. I don't think you can be emotionally ready for a relationship unless you can be complacent with being single. (Not necessarily permanently, but temporarily at the very least.) Take some time to love yourself, someone else will always come along.
