  • For what it's worth, the usual British pronunciation is KARR-uh-mel, with a long A. Use that, if you want to sound classy or ridiculous.

    Apparently, the tendency to ignore the second A in the word has been increasing in the States, and KAR-muhl is pretty common these days. I was born in the Fifties, and I know my parents pronounced it that way back when I was a kid. In fact, I think I can recall having arguments about it with my mom when I was a know-it-all teen.
