I am not sure that there is an American accent as there are so many different accents throughout the country that it would be hard to label one American. There are parts of the country where I have trouble understanding people when they speak with the particular local accent. I think when people relocate somewhere long term, there is a tendency to pick up certain phrases and parts of speech, and their way of speaking may change a little as a result. But I don't think most people fully adopt the local accent of a new area.
Of course you can just pull a Hugh Laurie and fake it.
