  • Obviously, as many have pointed out, the idea of sending food boxes is to cut out abuse of the system, which desperately needs to be fixed. Where I live, it is common knowledge that food stamps are sold at a rate of .50 cents on a dollar. Its so common to trade food stamps for cash here that when my wife asked her co worker why in the world she would cheat herself like that, she responded "just about everybody be doing that". Giving out food boxes instead of a voucher would basically eliminate this abuse, both by recipients, and those who take advantage of them. At a glance, this seems like a great idea.

But, there are a few downsides that make this a really bad idea.

With food boxes, people won't be able to pick and choose what kind of food they get and everyone has different nutritional needs.

Some people will sell their food boxes for drugs and get their food from churches and food banks (I know of at least one woman who does this already with her snap benefits and it seems a common practice).

Local stores will suffer a loss of sales which will harm local economies.

The logistics of shipping food will cause the already burdened taxpayers more money in the long run.

I'm not sure if there's a way to stop abuse of and dependency on the welfare system, but food boxes aren't it. The only thing that I do know is that in my experience, if the percentage of people who are abusing a system designed to give them at least a little help would would take the energy and effort they are using to abuse the system and direct it at getting themselves out of their situation, welfare would be cut in half.

    • You're missing the point of how expensive it is to move and ship heavy stuff. Imagine shipping just one can of beans to every emt card holder. That will be exponentially more expensive than any costs from individuals abusing the emt cards. Think.

But please do, move cans of spinach all over the country to stop a single mother from buying a steak with a card. I sell/lease warehouse/flex space and I selfishly kind of hope this bright idea gets implemented.
