There isn't a gene that is passed on for down syndrome or progeria as such, they occur through something we call point mutations. A better example would be children who are born needing glasses. Lots of children at the age of 3 and 4 are found to have shit eye sight and need glasses because they have crap genes that have been passed on and the reason the genes survive is because it's seen as normal to have bad eye sight because we can cover up the problem with glasses or laser eye surgery.
Is it normal to wonder why the diseased people are still in gene pool?
