Is it normal to wonder why people care about only certain tragedies?

  • I agree. The most clear way of illustrating this I can find is that, at least here in Britain, whenever a tragedy abroad happens they always mention how many Britons were victims even if it's a tiny minority of the total dead or injured, and focus almost entirely on them. Objectively, why is it important what nationality the people who died are, and why do the ones from our country get more media attention?

In fact, I think about this all the time. It annoys the hell out of because only caring about what happens on our doorstep or to the people on our streets makes us blind to the rest of the world's problems. Problems that are both more serious and numerous. I think it's an unpopular opinion though :/

In a nutshell, I agree with dappled and the OP.
