If I was using some, that would mean I had contempt for them. I wouldn't call someone a friend if I had contempt for them.
I guess I'd just call them people. Possibly acquaintances. For me "friend" is a term of endearment, and I wouldn't throw it around lightly.
Perhaps one person might see their situation as true "friendship", but the other person might not consider that person a friend.
