Is it normal to wish you were deaf?

I know people view deafness as something awful that needs to be corrected with a hearing aid, but it's so much more than that. Being deaf is a way of life, it's not a disability, it's an advantage, a gift. Sometimes, if not all the time, I wish I were deaf. I love the language, and without hearing, you can tune into your other senses with much more ease. Is it normal to wish this for myself?

  • Hmm I feel something similar. But there are downsides to all desires.
    G = Good | B = Bad

    Sometimes I want to be blind, so I can:

    G - Hear the wind and be able to focus more. Listen to people better and not have to judge by their appearance.

    B - I couldn't live without seeing all the beautiful things in life, sorry.

    Sometimes I want to be deaf, so I can:
    G - Be left alone in my thoughts more often. Look at people and wonder what's going on. It'd be kind of like if time were frozen, and watching people walk by in a public area without a sound to me, would be amazing.

    B - Music is such an important thing in my life, emotionally, I don't know what I'd do.

  • If you lick your toes enough maybe you'll become deaf.

  • I was actually contemplating writing a short story on the basis that being deaf is a gift. When you can't hear what people say it becomes easier to not let others words hurt you. Also, being deaf means that you live in a word of silence and frankly that sounds peaceful. I think you're normal.

  • I've always thought I was the only person who thought this way. I was bullied a lot in school, and always wished there was a way I couldn't hear them. I've always had a fascination with deaf people, the deaf culture, and I've been teaching myself sign language since I was 5. I'm currently in school to become an interpreter and can't tell if I admire or envy the deaf people I meet. I do know one thing though, I will marry a deaf man someday.

  • I'm hard of hearing going on completely deaf. Personally, I love it! Sometimes I'd rather sign then talk. Just because we may not be able to hear doesnt mean we dont like music. We can feel the vibrations of the music from the speakers to get the beat.

  • i couldnt take that, as a great lover of music, and someone who's dream is to be a voice actor, i could never veiw that as a gift, personally. maybe for other people, but especially music, and i miss doing my crazy rants and jokes and immpression to make peope laugh. Cause TBH i think one of my best fatures is my voice, i get complimented on it all the time.
