Is it normal to wish I was white?

  • When I spend time in groups that are exclusively non-white, I often feel like being white isn't such a great thing. In Afro-Caribbean groups I feel so uptight and like I take life way too seriously. When I spend time with Asian people, I feel like I'm lacking common wisdom. With South Americans, I feel shy and socially awkward. With Africans, I feel like I've forgotten how to have fun. With Middle Easterners, I feel like I'm not kind enough or welcoming enough and that their generosity will always outweigh mine.

Perhaps it's common to feel other colours/cultures/nations have a better deal of it. In which case, you and I are not so different.

Have you tried researching your family tree, by the way? There may be some white in there (although not necessarily for the best of reasons).

    • This. I have had the exact same experiences. I sometimes wonder what the hell the being European has to offer.
