Either his parents or girlfriend made him wear it. I actually had this sort of girlfriend who tried convincing me to wear one and even though she made me forget who I was back then I still did remember that I wasn't a tool but either way thud guy is a tool if he's wearing it and he's embarrassed about it. And if it is his girlfriend making him wear it then maybe he should move on
