If I'm traveling on business I feel exactly the same - I need a private, comfortable room, that's safe to leave my laptop in. I need to be able to work in the evening, and well rested for the next day.
If you're traveling for fun, especially if it's somewhere far away like Cambodia or Bolivia, you can have a lot of fun in the cheaper places. They're great for meeting other backpackers, while in a 5* hotel people tend to ignore each other.
But do what you want - it's your travels, not anyone else's.
Is it normal to want to travel in relative comfort?
