Is it normal to want to quit your job but you're boss is too scary?

I work in a newsagency and I hate it. I have been there for about 4 months now and I really want to quit because I do not like my boss at all. I am the weak, shy, timid kind of person lol, and my boss is incredibly intimidating and scary. He's an ex-policeman and swears and yells at employees in front of customers, which is embarrassing.
So, I really want to quit my job because of him but I'm afraid he will go spastic at me saying I haven't been there long enough, and he'll scare me into staying. Also, my sister got me that job so she will be pissed if I quit lol. And my family don't take me seriously either. To them, I am like a child who doesn't know what he wants, and when I am trying to be serious, they treat me like an idiot or that I should feel guilty for any decisions I make.
So in conclusion, is it normal for someone to want to quit their job because they're afraid of their boss? lol.

Is It Normal?

  • Just look him in the face and say FUCK YOU (then walk out quickly, before he gets you)

  • well if you want to quit then find another job beforehand.
but one of my first jobs was at a coffee place and my boss was very very mean to me. she actually made me cry the whole three days i was there but since then i have learned to stand up for myself and not be pushed around. im sure in time you will grow some balls and stand up for yourself too. good luck!

  • Yep, just where we sell newspapers, magazines, lotto etc.
I'm going to try and find a job in the field that I studied in, so he will have to write me a good reference letter hehe ;)

I think I might just make an excuse and say I have been offered a job in the field I studied in. I'm sure he will understand lol. Thanks :)

  • Ah, now, I am going to tell you something I only learnt a short time ago; and that's telling people to get FUCKED. If you don't like your job, but don't want to quit, just don't go. Just don't turn up. If he rings, don't answer the phone. He'll soon get the message and just replace you. If your sister gets angry, don't worry about it, she'll get over it. Parents might get mad, but they'll get over it. You said you wanted to be treated like an adult, well this would you be you making your own choices and own decisions in life, by going "You know what? Fuck that job" and not turning up. But all said, by doing that, word would go around. You wouldn't get a reference from your boss, other employers might not hire you because you just didn't turn up, so man grow some balls and just quit :-)

  • Condidering your thoughts, what is the problem with quitting? What can the boss do once you've left? He is obliged to write you a good reference if you need one. By 'newsagency', like 'newsagents shop' in the UK? Or a 'news agency'?
