Is it normal to want to put a knife in a survival kit?

This was my senior year. This was my last year in school our teacher asked us to make an emergency kit. I asked her and I assured her this was not a joke and I was serious" would we be able to bring a pocket knife in it"? It was for incase of a fire, earthquake flood, natural disaster incident. I honestly was not trying to be dumb or smartass I just thought this was reasonable. I told my parents this and they had believed it to be a reasonable question. My teachers response was something along the lines " Are you kidding me? Don’t be stupid why would you bring a knife for a survival kit?"(my thoughts its a survival kit). Turns out half the class never brought one and the teacher never reminded us about it either. Was it a dumb question? I asked because normally its now allowed to bring weapons unless permission. I asked because if everything is in rubles and the buildings fall down and there is broken power lines and people stuck in vehicles would you not want a pocket knife?

Is It Normal?
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • Are you fucking kidding me? If you choose one tool in a survival kit, it's a knife. If your teacher taught sewing, he or she would most likely refuse you bring a needle.

  • You always need a pocket knife. Survival kit or not.

  • Yes. Pocket knives are intended for these kind of situations. Your teacher is wrong about this one.

  • Your teacher is stupid, man. Pocket knives can be used for anything. ANYTHING! Did teachie think the knife would pose a danger? When it comes to survival, danger is all around us!

  • i agree, a good knife is vital to a survival kit. Also, i would ask your after class, why did they ask if you were joking? was it the idea of haveing a knife in a survival kit, or did they think you were actually going to bring one to school ?

    • I was the kid who knew all the awnsers and tryed to hard. The kid everyone hated for making them look bad and being told to shut up and cussed at for doing my work and paying attention. Why I hated HS.

    • I do think she took it ask I was just asking stupid things to bug her. I am known for being way too ethuisiastic and I sometimes drove that teacher up the wall since I was always so into it. Alot the teachers liked me for it and saw I tryed so hard and was way to happy about thing but I think I drove this one in particulaur kind of nutty. I do not think I was her favorite but I was always listening. I was kind of that kid way to happy to be alive.

  • In a emergency situation a swiss army knife would be a great idea and what the fuck was that teacher thinking?!

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • What? Knives are vital for those sorts of situations. Your teacher is definitely wrong....

  • bowie knives are good enough for the forest and intense survival situations..i prefer swiss army knives for school or college. the big ones are not allowed, besides it'd make me look like a serial murderer if i carried one around :P

  • Thets nod'a knyfe, thiis is a knyfe. That's my Australian accent :) I totally botched it, I know. Hehehe

  • The most important tool you can have with you is not a pocket, a good bowie knife. These guys can chop wood and bone, have a saw on the back. With some practice it's pretty easy to skin animals.

But this is real survival, maybe she just doesn't want kids to hang around with knives.

  • Survival kits do have knives in them so your question wasn't wrong. However schools don't like children playing with knives, that's why it wasn't allowed.

  • Your teacher shouldn't be teaching if they are responding like that. I was bitten by the survival bug when I realised how ill-equipped I was to live on the planet that spawned me. Knives (multiple) are very high up on the list of things you'll need for a survival kit. I'm no expert, but someone like Ray Mears definitely is and you rarely see him without a knife. Most often, he's actually using it for something too.

      • Blah, I've got a lot of respect for the job good teachers do, but yours doesn't sound like a good teacher.

          • Yeah, it doesn't mean you are doing something wrong, though. I know we've only heard one side of the story but there isn't a whole lot of room for interpretation. You asked a valid question and weren't treated well.
