One of our neighbours has a female Mallard pet duck. He's a jerk, so we talk to him as little as possible, but my understanding is that the duck just flew in one day from somewhere and she has hung around for something like seven years.
It's hard to know what's going on in any bird's head, but the duck seems happy enough. There's a tiny pond for it to splash around in, although she seems to spend most of her time wandering around the very small back yard, eating grass and occasionally quacking away for whatever reason.
Since it is an unusual pet, it's unlikely you're going to find any experts here, but there must be websites devoted to duck lovers.
