Is it normal to want to commit yourself to a psych ward?

I've been depressed for over a year, and things have just been getting progressively worse. I have had lots of suicidal thoughts and I an obsessed with my weight. I've lost almost 10 pounds since September which is a lot for my build (5'6" 110 lbs). I have started cutting myself too and I feel like maybe being in a psych ward would help.IIN?

If you feel that will help you then yes. It is fantastic that you recognise you need help and you want to change your life.
I've nearly voluntary gone to rehab a few times because I needed help but I couldn't do it myself. I needed someone or something to pull me back out the black hole.

Try talking to your doctor first. Maybe your condition would improve with visits to a psychologist or psychiatrist and maybe medication. They could give an objective opinion as to whether or not you need the 24hr supervision you'd get if committed.

I have had problems in the past with depression & panic disorder. Never been hospitalized but improved with meds & regular counselling. Iwish you the best and hope you find the peace of mind & relief you deserve. There are caring people out there.

Considering her height and weight it's probably best that she have voluntary treatment. She is very underweight. If 24 hour supervision shows that she is in fact eating well then she could always receive GP treatment afterward.

Voluntarily signing in to get help you need is a smart step. If they decide treatment on an out-patient basis after observation is the best you'll still be respected for taking your mental health seriously. I'm sure clinicians love motivated clients.

I would try out all your other options first - ask for support from a friend, talk to a counselor, talk to your doctor, join a support group or join a class or something of the sort (a hobby or skill you've always wanted to master) which would give you something to look forward to. If you still feel you need to commit yourself, visit a psych ward first to see if you think you'd belong there.
