Is it normal to want to be deaf?

Hello.
I've been studying ASL for quite a few years.
I fell in love with ASL. Its very beautiful language.
But, I have this urge, where I want to be deaf. I desire it more than anything. I'm very big into music. But, I have a deaf friend who relates to music the same as me with everything as he can "feel" it.
I even thought of a cochlear implant. Where it would make me deaf.

Knowing my luck if I made myself deaf, God would strike me blind the next day to spite me.

Be careful what you wish for!

I went deaf last year when my dad died and lost my balance with labyrthitis and have really loud tinnitus. At least you can practice being deaf by putting cotton wool in your ears or ear plugs but it is very difficult to live with, when you can't hear cars or you ignore people by mistake. I constantly have to ask people to repeat themselves and they eventually ask, "Are you deaf?" Unfortunately, there is no way of letting people know you are deaf when you are in a queue or being talked to by a cashier.

Enjoy ASL for what it is - but trust me, you don't really want to be deaf :o(

i fully agree. i knew a neighbours-girl as a friend that was deaf during my childhood.

"play" deaf all you want with professional earplugs and stuff. i'd imagine good sleeping plugs and studio-quality headphones should combine to basically shut out all but the most loud noises.

but don't go there for real unless destiny forces it upon you.

I've always thought I was the only person who thought this way. I was bullied a lot in school, and always wished there was a way I couldn't hear them. I've always had a fascination with deaf people, the deaf culture, and I've been teaching myself sign language since I was 5. I'm currently in school to become an interpreter and can't tell if I admire or envy the deaf people I meet. I do know one thing though, I will marry a deaf man someday.

If you want to be deaf just to experience ASL properly then why don't you get some good earplugs and just use them for a couple of days instead of sacrificing a lifetime of hearing just for the sake of that one experience. Most deaf people would give anything to have their hearing back.

well, be careful what you wish for.
But i know what you mean , sometimes i wonder what it would be like to be blind or deaf. I wish that i could experience it for like a day , then go back to normal.

    ASL? Sounds so familiar...

I agree with Joybird. Be careful what you wish for. Being deaf can be dangerous!

I love ASL too, but I would be careful what you wish for. Practice being deaf (like ppl suggested b4) and see what it's like before you really want to.

If I were you, I wouldn't wish such a thing. I mean imagine you could't hear anything for the REST of your life!!
