Is it normal to use my phone as a coping mechanism

I use it when I have got nobody to turn to.

It's an efficient weapon to use when you're insecure of dining alone at a restaurant while everyone else at the other tables has their own company.

I think a lot of people use their phones to cope with loneliness, and boredom these days

Cope is anything that prevents you from hitting rock bottom. It's only by hitting our lowest point and reaching this total despair do we force ourselves to change/improve our circumstances.

Much like how internet friends are a cope for real ones, your phone is a cope for introspection. You should try spending ten minutes without your phone and with nothing to do, and discover just how miserable you are in your own company. That's the first step towards improving that problem.

I don't understand why you're being downvoted. There is a lot of truth to what you are saying, but today's society seems to be obsessed with using anything they can as a crutch and making excuses to keep doing it rather than improving their situation.

While using your phone, the Internet, etc. in a healthy moderation is definitely not a bad thing, if it becomes almost like an addiction like with many people who are constantly glued to it, that's a problem. It's necessary to learn to put the phone down and actually deal with some of your problems, and put in the effort to fix the things you can rather than just trying to distract yourself from them.

Honestly, I found myself spending way too much time on my phone (still probably do, but have cut it back) and came to the realization that I don't want to look back on my life someday and realize that I spent a lot of valuable time in my room on my phone. I'd rather nip it in the bud now than make excuses to keep doing it.
