There is a difference between understanding the mentality behind an extreme or hateful viewpoint and agreeing with it/condoning it.
For example, I understand why my grandparents dislike homosexuals from their religious perspective and from their cultural upbringing. But I do not agree with them or support them in their beliefs.
Understanding does not necessarily mean supporting or agreeing with something.
