Is it normal to twirl your hair and brush it against your lips?
For as long as I can remember I have twirled my hair obsessively. Not every second of the day, but almost. If my hands aren't busy, you can pretty much bet I'm twirling my hair.
It's not the twirling that alarms me. It's HOW I do it that I think is strange. I grab a good piece of hair and twirl it for a while. Then I get the ends even and poke the sharp ends of my hair against my lips or other areas with soft skin. Sometimes my nose, sometimes my finger, sometimes my upper lip or cheek. Most of the time though, I poke the hair against my lips. And I do this until it hurts. Sometimes I do it so much that my lips bleed a little or I turn my skin red. It doesn't hurt enough to be unpleasant. To me, it's just a little bit of pain, just enough to feel good.
You know when you get a hair cut and the ends of your hair are all even and blunt (no splint ends)? Well, that's my favorite time to do this. The hair is super sharp and pointy.
I've noticed that I also like rubbing soft things against my lips. For someone reason, I get a better idea of what things feel like by putting them against my lips.
Does anyone else in the world do these things? I've heard bits and pieces of things about people being stuck in the "oral phase." Is this what is going on with me? I did suck my thumb privately until I was 13 years old. Basically, does anyone know what is wrong with me and how I should treat it?
Thank you for your time. Please be kind.
