Is it normal to try to be as un-normal as possible?

Like, say a new movie comes out, and I really like one of the characters. If I find out that that character is liked by many other people, I feel the urge to try and not like that character, or lie about who my favorite character is, just so I won't be like everybody else. Is this normal?

  • It's normal to not like the newest trends.
But you shouldn't try and lie to yourself or others about what you like. You will come off sounding fake.
Why do you do what you do? Why do you believe it is better?

  • I feel the exact same way! I try to ignore it though. Sometimes it's nice to accept that you are like everybody else in way. If you like a certain character, then you can bond with others over it instead of being "different" and alone.

  • Stop trying to be special and just be yourself. Trying to be different is essentially the same as buying into trends, you're still selling out to an ideal, even if that ideal is being different.

Better to not try to be anything and just be.

  • I don't know why I do that, I just feel this urge to be different. I usually don't listen to it though, because I know it's silly.
