Is it normal to think there's a reason people don't read books?

  • Hmm, I kind of see where you're coming from, but I'm sort of on the fence. I do think that if there were video games 100 years ago, then fewer people would read. I just don't think that's a good enough excuse. All that says to me is that we shouldn't act like only this generation has a problem, but rather that we can get away with it now, in a sense. I can't really describe what I mean very well.

I'm not entirely sure, but maybe some people don't bother with books because they take time and it isn't instant stimulation. I know people who give up on books if they aren't "hooked" by the first few pages. And apparently them reading in the first place is some sort of achievement. I think that's ridiculous, the fact that some people don't have the patience to wait for something great, just because...well, I don't even know why, to be honest. Is it really so exhausting for people to read or something? I can understand why some people would want everything quicker and non-stop action, but I don't think that makes it right. They're missing out, in my opinion.

Why wouldn't people choose entertainment which is more stimulating? To learn something, to read something and feel like you're a better person by the end of it, to actually think, to have a connection with something which goes beyond that which you'd get from something quick (and sometimes completely worthless). I'm not really sure, just my opinion.:)
