Is it normal to think the world owes you?

  • This odd view that we're somehow outsiders, occupiers of the world, that we are merely consumers of the earth, seems very odd to me. We are as much a part of the world as any other species. We aren't owed anything, but by exactly the same thinking we do not owe anything. The world hasn't 'allowed us' to live on it, there is no permission or allowance given to us, life isn't leased out to each baby by the world.

We shouldn't take what we have for granted and eat ourselves into oblivion because that runs contrary to our instincts. We need the world to keep on turning and the mill of life to keep on churning or we're done for. But this is a necessity driven by selfish desire to thrive (I don't mean that in any negative way) and not because we are in debt to the lovely ground we were born on.

    • It wasn't clear how I meant allow. I meant more like this planet allows every living thing on it the life that it has because the conditions are right, as opposed to jupiter or something. I suck at explaining things :( if that makes any more sense, I don't know. I'm exhausted and its only 8 pm damn it

      • I think I see what you meant :) I agree it should be enough that we can survive here, that the conditions are right. To desire more than merely existing is reasonable, but to expect everybody to provide more is unreasonable. Generally we have to work at it, and unfortunately some have to work harder than others.
