Is it normal to think that those with as and autsim are disabled ?

Is it normal to think that people with asperger syndrome / autism are kinda socially "retarded " ?,some people say that they aren't retarded , if it's not retardation then what is it ? ,a disorder ?

Is It Normal?

  • First thing, why are there so many posts about AS?

Second thing, I wouldn't call it a disability unless it affects your life so badly that you really need an aid to help you get through every day.

  • Well having autism does usually entail not having good social skills, but I wouldn't call them socially retarded. If you do choose to call them this, then understand that most people also must be retarded in some aspects of life, since not many humans are perfect at EVERYTHING!

  • I would classify a mental illness such as AS as a disability, because it deviates from the norm, but that doesn't mean that it has to wreck your life.

If you classify retardation as relating to IQ, people with mental disorders are often not retards.

  • Autism and mental retardation are two different disorders.

  • No. You are ignorant. We aren't retarded. As a matter of fact, people with asperger's syndrome have average to above average intelligence. So you're retarded if you think we're retarded.

  • Sociable people are retarded.

  • What does retarded actually mean any more? I worked with a guy who had Asperger's and he was stunningly bright. If retarded means too clever for you to understand then, yeah, okay.

  • Political correctness aside, I'm sure even the most proud Aspies would admit to being *socially* retarded; because in truth we are all retarded in some ways.

  • People with autism can be mentally retarded, but the two are not synonymous. People with autism learn and interact differently than "typical" people, but I work with autistic children and I am surprised every day by how intelligent these 4-6 year olds are - even the ones who can't talk!

  • I personally think ADHS and autism. I was once diagnosed with it. But strangely undiagnosed I think its just a way to describe people with certain character traits. There isnt much evidence of its existence. I have been diagnosed and undiagonsed for years mainly cause I had an alcoholic father so my social skills fell behind a bit, but I am almost caught back up. In short ass burgers just means your smart but have strange things about you people don't understand

  • Any TV programmes I've watched about AS and autism have never said that these people are retarded in any way. In fact, there is usually a specialist area in which they are in fact genius. Whether that should be maths, a pop group, facts about aeroplanes, etc.

Where are you getting this other info from?
It seems too strange to me!
