Is it normal to think that the beatles aren't that great?

For the past few years, I have realized that the beatles actually aren't as good as other bands, like for instance, the kinks, monkees, and so on. They are just much more popular.

Their music is ok, but really, most of it sounds sad and bland, and some of it is even chaotic and dull. They put more effort on experimenting with music than they do actually working on its quality.

Then, there's the thing where they all dress up in the colorful costumes that look like some kind of gay army, and they do the campy stuff with mustaches and stuff. I don't get it. are they trying to simulate a drug trip?

I can not tell them apart. They all just look kind of the same. I'm not even sure which first names go with which last names. I don't know which ones are dead.

Then, there's the fact that they just split up, and they haven't performed or made any new music since way back, and they hate each other, which just kind of proves that it was all just for show.

Personally, I like the kinks way better. They have funnier songs, and don't experiment too much with anything. The beatles songs are just kind of sad. what the hell is that thing with the lonely people and like that?

I get that this is an unpopular opinion, but they just don't seem too great. Is this normal? Is there another human on the planet who has not been hit with Ringo Mccartnie's mind controlling ray gun? please let me know soon. I hope I am not alone.

  • I always thought they were overrated, but no band was ever as bad as the stones.

Sounds to me like Sgt. Pepper is the only album you've listened too.

I dont like the Beatles much but any band that made girls from 10 to 80 pee themselves must have done something right.

The Monkees? You know that the Monkees were comprised of one musician and three actors, and all the hits were written by external songwriters? I think the Monkees are brilliant but not to be compared to original bands like the Beatles or the Kinks!
And while we're on about the Kinks, good though they were they had just the one sound.. The Beatles did many different kinds of music. I think the thing that says most about the quality of Lennon and McCartney's songwreiting is how many times they've been covered by other people.

TLDR: The Beatles ARE that good whether you think so or not!

      I agree.
I don't ever recall anyone saying "The Monkees and the Kinks were a great influence on my lyrics and music."

I love Pink Floyd and hardly ever listen to the Beatles but I know the Beatles were a major influence on stuff that followed. Okay, so maybe not Ringo so much.

...Don't get me wrong. I love The Kinks and The Monkees. But their music was mostly simple and a lot of their songs sound the same (especially The Kinks' songs.) The Beatles were so much more creative and with every year and with every album, they grew and presented something new. Listen with a 'musical ear', and you'll hear it. Sure, The Kinks and The Monkees recorded catchy songs too, but those songs often don't have the musical quality that The Beatles' songs have.

Seriously? Of course it is normal, everyone can have a different opinion than the other, a different music taste or just simply not liking a song.

    Perfectly normal.

  • Great band but I also think The Yardbirds, The Kinks and early Rolling Stones were as good as The Beatles.

Err maah Gerrd, you spoke against something considered sacrosanct.

I like Beatles songs, but yeah, I can't see what the huge fuss was about them. Still I like their music.

Totally normal; everyone has different tastes. You can acknowledge an artist/band's great popularity or talent but that doesn't mean you will automatically like them too. Heaps of people like pizza, some don't. It's just a personal preference.

On a side note, I personally like their music. Not exactly a favourite, but not something I dislike when I hear it.

I was just listening to 'We Can Work It Out' and comparing it to 'Eleanor Rigby' in a side by side listen of their older and newer works.

While I won't call the Beatles the best band ever, I'll say the variety in style is what most captures my attention. If I need a rock song it's a click away, and if I wanna jam out to a sweeter one it's just as easy. Their popularity is irrelevant to me.

Yeah, you didn't do much research on the band, did you? And that's okay. We all have our own taste, but I often find that people who make a big deal over not liking what is popular are usually trying too hard to be different. The popularity of the band did not come from the quality of their music. Rarely is talent the driving force behind a global phenomenon. They shook reality because of the effect they had on the public. Have you ever been to a live show where people are screaming and fainting for joy? Large crowds are a beast of their own, and they made them happen. Elvis did too, to some extent. But the Beatles helped shaped a shift in society. One was assassinated for being outspoken. So it really isn't about how subjectively good their music is. However it is standing the test of time, so there is more to in then just a cultural fad. It symbolizes more that what one can put into words. And no, you don't have to like it, but to deny its importance is being intentionally confrontational. Which means you have more in common with them then you may think.

They were talented musicians but for the most part they were just making pop music
