It's normal to be fascinated by certain cultures you don't belong to. But bombarding a stranger with questions like that, right when you meet them, is pretty fucking weird. I don't blame you for being a bit weirded out.
That being said, they might just be shocked to meet a Native American person who actually *looks* Native American. Usually, when someone tells me they're "part Native American," they look whiter than Hank Hill, and "pat Native" means they have one ancestor somewhere in their family history. That type of thing is so common where I life, that to be honest, it's a tiny bit of a shock whenever I meet a Native American person who actually *doesn't* look whiter than me (I'm a white girl).
