I've never met a Native American but, if I did, I can't see that I'd be bringing up their heritage as an opening line. Just like I wouldn't with anyone else. Seems a bit rude!

I don't know and I will probably never know for sure. Whenever someone else has brought up my native American heritage, they always attach the prestige with something very negative. Saying that Native Americans are alcoholics and that if I drink that I'll automatically become one too. There's always "ah"/"oh" and then awkwardness and strange judgemental looks sent my way. It's hard to gauge how people really feel about Native Americans in general.

It's normal to be fascinated by certain cultures you don't belong to. But bombarding a stranger with questions like that, right when you meet them, is pretty fucking weird. I don't blame you for being a bit weirded out.

That being said, they might just be shocked to meet a Native American person who actually *looks* Native American. Usually, when someone tells me they're "part Native American," they look whiter than Hank Hill, and "pat Native" means they have one ancestor somewhere in their family history. That type of thing is so common where I life, that to be honest, it's a tiny bit of a shock whenever I meet a Native American person who actually *doesn't* look whiter than me (I'm a white girl).

I think native americans are fascinating people. I also think they are very attractive. Most of them, anyway. The structure of the face is just lovely. Its very sad to me that they were forced onto reservations. What the hell?! You were here first!!!!!!!

I bet people say that because they are interested. I love Native Americans and their culture. I'm even considering a native American name if I have a baby boy. Native American culture is very beautiful but over time for some reason it has become a "white trash" trend to like native American stuff. Don't ask me why but that is truly a trend in America... Anyway I just put all of that aside. I'm not trashy at all but I love it. I think people ask because it is so cool and humbling to meet someone with your heritage. Even though humanity thinks that they have come so far most people are miserable... A simpler way of life would be much better. You remind people of that and give people hope that there is still something left, or something more than the horrors on the news and so on.

People are just curious and a bit stupid at times. It seems foreign to many, almost mythical. I have a few friends with native blood, it is somewhat common in my area. I have one friend who is full Klamath and has a story that she paints into amazing pieces of art. She wants to tell her story and I am happy to listen. Having a degree in Anthropology, I am very curious as to the modern cultural behaviors that exist within the tribes and how they fit into the modern American society. So I ask questions. However, I usually let them bring it up before I start probing. I am aware that many don't feel very connected to that aspect of their heritage. But if they do, I would love to hear stories. But I am tired of the casino debate, so let's not talk about that.

    So I'm curious. What tribe?

You should teach them. Or you could teach me something. How would you say, "all is well" in Havasuapi?

People are naturally afraid of those 'different' from them. You're good to answer and laugh it off.
