I personally believe that self maintenance is a reflection on how well you think of yourself. My partner couldn't care less whether I was raggedy or glamorous. I put effort into my appearance because I like to look fantastic, it's not about society or how others treat me, I was actually caught off guard(and flattered) when I was asked by a store clerk if I was a model. So I think that it is great as long as you're not pressured into doing it, I agree with your terms :)
