PTSD can also be an effect of traumatic childhoods and yes, it does relate to 'comfort' eating. You may also have a Thyroid or other hormonal problem. Ask you doctor to refer you to an Endocrinologist, just to make sure one way or another.
I was the same way until I saw a Naturopath. After cleansing toxins from my system, eating healthy and taking specific supplements (e.g.- Omega 3's, Vit. B, etc) my depression eased to next to nothing and the weight came off...permanently.
My childhood wasn't too bad the hell started when I was around 12.
