Pale skin was always considered aristocratic and chic until the middle of the 1900s. Bikinis had a lot to do with tanning popularity.
In previous centuries rich people didn't work outdoors and do could stay pale. In the1950s rich people started hanging out at the beach thus, tan became a sign of leisure instead of manual outdoor labor.
Is it normal to think tans are a little gross?

This is weird. Since when did pale skin become "in"? Majority of people I'm around get tans or think tan is better looking."
