Is it normal to think sobriety and rehab are bs?

Rehab is a buisiness that has managed to get police and courts to force people to be its customers. Sobriety is BS and the negative effects of drugs on people is extremely exaggerated. Anybody feel this way? Sober people are just church dicks trying to tell people how to live their lives?

Psychiatry is also big business. That doesn't mean it doesn't work or that people shouldn't be taking their meds.

The rest of your post isn't worthy of comment. Go look at/speak to people addicted to drugs and alcohol and say that the effects are "extremely exaggerated."

    • I'm addicted to drugs and alcohol. Its the only way I know how to live, and I do without help from anyone. Been this way since I was a kid. I know many people who've done worse at it, so I get your point. Rehab is a multi million dollar industry that preys on the vulnerable. All vultures.

Ya...you may figure it all out once you grow up...but some people never grow up and become addicted to more than just booze.

Balance is key in all things. Psychoactive substances being an aspect of life that needs a bit more attention than others. Too much of anything can be detrimental or too little. Everybody's idea of what a centered state with substances will be unique, for some sobriety is their center.

I agree to a point. Rehab is basically a business and sham. A person will only stop drugs or booze if they want to. My ex-wife was a rabid, raging alcoholic, and even a DUI didn't make her stop. I called rehab twice for her, but knew she wouldn't go. Or, if she did, she'd only run away.

Went to families of AA meetings, myself, to learn to deal with her drinking, and, while found it somewhat helpful, largely only went to vent. Too much spirituality and acceptance going on. I was looking for answers, not religion. Did meet some nice people, though.

Depends on the country for the usefulness of rehab yo, but as 90% of the people i meet online are from the USA i'm going to assume you're from the USA in which case: yes literally 100% of your healthcare is a cash grab, rehab included.

As for the negative effects of drugs - drugs is the field i work in. Technically, the education side, i teach in high schools about drugs & harm reduction, but as a part of that I get very real observations of the lives of drug addicts & recovered additcs so i'm able to teach...
One of the most heartbreaking things i ever heard working with a group of about 20 recovered drug addicts-
<talking about intentional/unintentional abuse> "I mean i didn't intentionally abuse my child" (abuse coming from how they acted while under the influence & addicted)"none of us did it intentionally but we all did it"...

Addiction ruins peoples lives; makes them homeless from cash spent on their particular addiction, makes them family-less since no one wants to be around addicts, gives people bad health from lack of self care as time is devoted towards their addiction rather than care, and in the worst case- serious physical/mental illnesses. Like i know people who've been through all of this- in the group of recovered addicts i work with on education projects, they ALL have stories with one or all elements of this.

If we're talking not addiction, i'd agree- not wholly, of course, in my town alone 6 people died in the month of august on the first time taking drugs because they took NPS...
But largely yes. Of course, if I were to encourage first time drug taking i'd be encouraging addiction because of the nature of drugs...gateway drugs + various factors of addiction...

You're right about rehab being a big business. It started slow and with good intentions but has morphed into a cash grab. Most of these classes and rehabs that get used by the courts are nothing but adult day cares that do nothing but cost a fortune (which you have no choice but to pay because court order). The only thing they do is teach you how expensive and annoying getting caught is, they don't do much in the way of actually treating addiction. Total bullshit. And with the ACA covering rehab, facilities have sprung up by the dozens and they are horribly ineffective but the money is there for the taking. That's one reason I am fine with the ACA repeal.

Depends on your drug. Depends on if your really addicted or not

A addiction which is called, is not good for you.

So yea maybe sobriety would be better for you than being addicted to something that could hurt your health and your pocket haha

Normal to think that if you're an addict in denial

    • Sounds like rehab counselor talk. There's no way to not be a drug addict to those people. Their whole mindset is that your lying because you're a drug addict so they cant trust anything you say.

I agree. If you say you don't have a problem you are "in denial". It's circular logic at it's finest. Has any rehab ever assessed someone as having nsp? I bet they haven't.

A friend of mine hardly ever drinks like maybe twice a year. She got a dui on New Years (blew a .085) from 3 drinks. She was not drunk at all in my opinion and was only pulled over for a headlight.

She got an assessment and they said she was an alcoholic because she didn't want to promise to never drink again. Absurd.
