No, 41 MPG isn't impressive in a car that size. A Ford Focus which is much larger (and more practical) can do the same. It also doesn't use premium fuel like the fortwo.
I know it's an automated manual. That doesn't give it an excuse to suck. That transmission is unbelievably jerky. No wonder that cars sales blow ass. It had a good first year but has been struggling ever since. You could buy a much better car for the same price.
Agreed in relation to the smart car. It is impressive that modern compacts like a Ford Focus, Honda Civic, etc. can do as well as those old cars. You have to remember that those old compact cars are much much lighter than modern ones. Current safety standards add a lot of weight to a compact car. Look at it this way, a Dodge Omni weighed about 2,200 or 2,300 pounds. A new Ford Focus weighs about 2,900 pounds. The Focus also produces 140hp while the Omni only produced 75-95hp. The Focus gets better mileage than the Omni did and is much heavier and a lot more powerful.
Technology has definitely come a long way. Imainge the mileage you could get if you put a modern engine in a Dodge Omni...That is why the smart fortwo is not impressive.
I think everyone should be given an exercise bike. As they exercise, it charges electric motors. Next day, they flip a switch and the charge they've accumulated drives the wheels. A fit populace and an unpolluted country!
People in prisons should charge the bikes of the disabled, as people in prisons don't need to go anywhere the next day but the disabled probably do.
Brilliant idea!!
30 years ago I stayed with a family in Germany who were only able to watch one hour of TV if they spent one hour on an exercise bike. I don't know the techie details but the exercise bike charged up the TV for one hour.
I would buy a gadget that would force my family to exercise to charge the computer, phones, tv, etc.
I bet you could invent one, or link the 'bits' required together!
It was a bit of a drunken ramble, as witnessed by the fact I should have said "charged batteries" instead of motors. But the point remains that if you want something in this world, you should give at least as much as you take and earn it. I don't think it's a difficult concept but the way we seem to live is all about what we can get for free, what we can take, and not what we can give. There's no balance.
On what seems an unconnected note (but isn't), I want to thank you personally for a reply you gave to a story of mine recently. Your words helped and it also helped to know someone cares. I think we see the world a similar way and I'm glad I'm not in it alone. So thank you. It meant a lot.
I saw a popular science article that showed various ways to obtain electricity from stuff we do everyday, and incorporated these into a future chicago.
Stuff like little generators in revolving doors, divices to gain electric from walking in sidewalks, roads, and the obvious solar collectors incorporated into buildings. awesome ideas, if it generates enough to offset the initial cost.
Lool...with certain colors they look cool. I love the punch buggy cars - they look pretty awesome. Everytime I see one I punch my friend and say 'Punch buggy no punch back!'. I just think it looks cool and funny to drive around in a car that tiny. I always wonder if people are ever comfortable in those things.
