Is it normal to think normal doesn't exist?

People worry themselves over so many neurotic angsty things - does normal doesn't exist: If you are otherwise happy, then who cares if you like the smell of cow dung, occasionally see a film on your own (shock! horror!) or still hope for a Backstreet Boys reunion?

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • Normal does exist but there is no "universal" normal.

    • That's very true...what is "normal" is relative to each culture and society.

The problem comes in when human populations explode, normalcy becomes at the same time rigid and flexible and fluid, completely confusing everyone with competing concepts. And then there's globalization...!

  • Normality is innormal & irrational. There's nothing perfectly normal, everything & everyone has its own (unique) abnormalities.
If everything were normal - life wouldn't exist on earth, for life itself is a huge abnormality of physical world.
    Adequacy is the word.

  • we'd like to make ourselves normal, but it makes us focus less on what makes us unique. If you have a group of people who share your interests and are ok with you as you are, even if it's not normal, then fk it.

  • "Normal" really depends on your surroundings.

Basically it's just a concensus of most people and broadly recognized because MOST people accept whatever they're considering to be normal.

  • Some people are simply curious about the extent to which they differ from the rest of society. It isn't always a curiosity driven by fear, anxiety, sadness; sometimes it's just plain wondering.

  • being normal if you think about it is not really possable, because if you were normal you would not be different. like calling someone weird i take it as a complement cause to say that means your calling the person different and unique even if it was not intentioned.

  • Of course there's a normal. All that means is that behavior is predictable. Is it not? Very few people are completely unpredictable. Even those who are off a baseline, are still 'normal' within their category. Like a serial killer....while that's not typical in general, serial killers have their own set of 'normal', which makes them predictable for what they are.

    • Not really, the deeper you look into an individual regardless of being a serial killer or not the harder it gets to generalize their actions. They may have things in common with people but their motives and methods are all different.

That's like saying because we all have skin, we are all the same. Or, because dogs and humans are mammals, dogs and humans are the same!

      • Sure, whatever you say. Typical, everyone thinks they are so unique. Get over it, you're NOT.

All sorts of professions use your predictability to get over on you. From advertising to law enforcement to the military, they are taking advantage of knowing how you think, predicting your reactions and behaviors. And obviously, it's working.

        • Most especially the advertising and actuarial industries, those are very good analogies.

        • Really now?

You seem like an abrasive pretentious asshole, but besides that, i do agree that people generally think in the same way, but you cant say that every single person fits into a specific mold.
