Religion isn't a bad thing, people just make it look bad. The Bible/Koran both state that war, killing, etc. is bad, always. Wars about religion only exist because there are shit loads of dicks in every religion that make people believe war is good etc. The whole religious system shouldn't even exist according to the Bible, there shouldn't be a pope or whatever, it's all bullcrap. I'm not religious btw, I somehow just know this.
About the music, you're totally right, and people just are becoming dicks and more and more selfish. For example, I hate people who think Coldplay is a rock band, it just isn't. This is not only the case with music, but with kinda everything.
