Is it normal to think its rude to describe how someone looks like?

I was talking to a fellow classmate about a new professor that is teaching her class. Anyway when I asked how the professor looked like so I could tell who he is next time I see him, she tells me that she thinks its rude to describe someones physical appearence. I jokingly reply "So is he like ugly?"
She was like dead serious about not telling me anything. So is this normal? Do you think its rude to describe how someone looks like? Thanks for you insight.

  • People have all kinds of different standards for what's rude. What's important is whether it seemed rude to you.

And no it's not rude to describe how someone looks.

  • My boss gets very embarrassed (in a funny way) at having to describe someone in case he says something rude. Consequently, we ask him ALL the time, even if we know who someone is. He's part of the joke, and laughs at himself too, but it's funny to hear him be really vague and say things like "It's that woman with the hair".

Personally, I don't think it's rude unless the description is rude.

  • There are polite ways to describe even ugly people. This is why a good knowledge of vocabulary is helpful.
