Is it normal to think honduras refugees can safely stop in mexico?

So, another mob of thousands from Honduras is headed to the US border thru central America. We know from vetting similar mobs, that many of them are likely criminals or otherwise highly undesirable immigrants. They will try to claim "refugee status" to get into the US. But if they're safely in Mexico, seems to me they no longer qualify for needing refugee protections. They have already made it into Mexico and safely away from the oppression in Honduras. Isn't this normal to think this way?

Why can't citizens from impoverished nations be like Americans were before the U.S. was a country and stand up against their enemies? If Americans ran away from their enemies, there wouldn't be a U.S. to flee to.

Do you seriously not know the answer to this question?

I wondered that the last time this happened. They may still PREFER to be in the US, but their "fleeing oppression" story ends once they've gotten out of the oppressive country and into Mexico.
