If he always had his phone with him at all times and never lets it out of his sight then yes something is going on. If he spends more time texting this girl than talking to you then I'm sorry to say relationship will not last. My friend cheated on her bf and it was a rather similar situation, becUse she was constantly texting his friend just as 'friends' they did eventually start to grow feelings as would be expected I guess when you find someone attractive and spend a lot of time texting them. So, keep am eye on his behaviour and ask him about it.
