Sometimes laws are quite contradictory. Take for example, The United Nations, The Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Article 2, stipulaltes that everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms, without distinction of any kind. It does not state it specifically, but I think that age should be included in this list. Article 7 reinforces this, as all are entitled to equal protection against any discrimination. I feel that many laws, in many jurisdictions, in fact, do discriminate based on the age of the individual. Article 16 contains several problems. It pre-supposes a 'traditional' marriage that is usually founded within religious ideology. It has become quite common in some societies for non-traditional families to occur. It does not address these. I feel that it is important for a child's development to have both a male and female role model. This is why I think that this section should be amended to include Mosuo-type family units. It also says that men and women of "full" age can marry. What exactly, is a "full age"? To me a "full age" is 135 years old. It also pre-supposes religious tenets that people do not have sexual relationships prior to marriage. In many societies, sexual relationships are common or even encouraged prior to marriage, but sex and sexual intercourse are often confused.
Although adolescents are sexually mature at a younger age (especially in obese children), this does not mean that they are physically able to safely reproduce or that they are mentally mature enough to raise a family or that they are economically in a position to raise a family. This is why contraception is absolutely essential.
I feel that laws, not just Age of Consent laws, should be structured such that a person becomes entitled based on ability and maturity, not age. This would put the onus on an individual to act responsibly and maturely, rather than sometimes draconian laws being imposed on people, often with harsh punishments for violation.
As far as adolescent sexuality goes, I think that an adolescent should be defined as a person who has entered puberty and is not mature enough to have voting
rights. I think that laws pertaining to adolescent sexuality should be structured such that if either partner is deemed to be an adolescent, their sexual partner should not be greater than two years in age differential.
I will advocate to young people to change these laws, but before the minions rise up, be certain to have an adult that supports your position.
Is it normal to think Age of Consent laws should be abolished?
