  • I also had a problem with this several years ago, but luckily it was fairly short lived (around 6 months or so). Going to counseling was helpful for me, and I think that you should do the same thing. While the fact that you've developed a fairly long term pattern of SI, the fact that your incidents are infrequent is likely to make putting a stop to this dangerous pattern somewhat easier. Also, have you ever told anyone about this problem? If not, you should tell someone you trust about it.

    • Thank you for this detailed comment, it's a relief to talk to someone else who went through the same thing and is doing better now.

      A few months ago I told a girl I was dating about it, and she got very panicky so I haven't told anyone since.

      I also told my therapist (who I see once a month) that I have problems with self-injury, and I told my psychiatrist (a few years ago, when I had a psychiatrist) that I have issues with intrusive thoughts. I'm not sure I ever talked in detail about the two issues together, though. I should probably do that.
